Recently, employers have struggled to fill jobs. We are in a strange time when there are more jobs available than people to fill them.
There are multiple reasons for this employment gap, such as parents staying home to care for children or staying home to avoid Covid. Another possibility, however, is due to the many government programs providing funding for childcare, food, and rent.
When people have a safety net, or are no longer concerned for their next meal, they have less motivation to go back to work.
Proverbs 16:26 teaches, “A worker’s appetite works for him, for his hunger urges him on.”
As we consider new government programs, let’s keep in mind the negative impact these programs may have on motivating people to work. The dignity of work is important.
