Stephen M.R. Covey in his book, Speed of Trust, wrote, “Trust is equal parts character and competence… You can look at any leadership failure, and it’s always a failure of one or the other.”
Leadership failure comes when a gap exists in character or in competence. Character and competence working together build trust amongst a team and give the leader credibility.
Jethro said in Exodus 18:21, “Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens”
God chose to place leaders not solely because of their skill, but because of their character. Great leaders have balanced skill with great character.
