When I speak with business owners about mission statements, I often hear hesitancy about referencing God in any public statements. Although many know their purpose is to glorify God through their business, they fear proclaiming Him publicly.

Some steer the conversation to a famous saying credited to St. Francis of Assisi that says, “Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.”

But theologians who have researched this quote have discovered that St. Francis never said those words. The concept runs counter to scripture.

In Matthew 10, Jesus said, “Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.”

God desires us to acknowledge Him with our actions and our words.
