A study of the Gospel of Matthew by the Theology of Work Project notes that Matthew 6:21 is worded somewhat counter-intuitively. Jesus instructed his listeners to store up treasures in heaven instead of on earth, where those treasures are subject to loss. He then said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

The authors call this the “Treasure Principle,” noting that treasure transforms hearts. The authors write that Jesus’ message is, “the possessions you own will change you so that you will care more about them than about other things.”

The financial gain from our work is a tremendous benefit. But we must always be vigilant to ensure our treasures aren’t changing us, pushing aside our trust in God for his provision.
