When a new school year begins, an experienced teacher learns to hold a tight rein on student discipline. But later, their grip can be loosened as the class learns to obey directives.

My friend, Jim, as a seasoned executive, says that employers might consider this same tight-to-loose concept with new hires. Initially, weekly check-ins with tight accountability are warranted. Later, however, the manager can loosen their oversight when appropriate.

God treated the Israelites in the same way.

After Israel’s exile from Egypt, God gave Israel hundreds of laws. Moses said in Deuteronomy 27:26, “Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out.”

With Jesus’ New Covenant, however, God provided more freedom.

If you have a new employee, consider using the Tight-to-Loose approach.
