While others poured coffee, I poured orange juice, until a catering employee jerked it from my hand. She abruptly informed me that breakfast wasn’t yet served.
The owner of the catering company stepped in and filled my glass. Smiling, she said to me and her associate, “It’s okay. Breakfast will be served soon.”
In John 10:12-13 Jesus describes his role as the good shepherd and contrasts it to a hired hand running from danger, “The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep.” Jesus said, “The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.”
Getting staff to think like an owner is challenging. Encourage, and reward, them to think like a shepherd instead of a hired hand. It will benefit all.
