When I was a boy, we attended a church where most weeks we heard about our sin and our need for repentance. Our pastor’s messages elicited guilt, conviction, but also a desire to change.

Many people were saved, but the sermons caused some to fear God in a way that was unhealthy. Today, many churches rarely discuss sin and repentance. Instead, we hear about love, forgiveness and happiness.

Such unbalanced teaching can result in a love for God, but many no longer have a reverential fear of God or sin’s consequences.

1 John 5:17 teaches, “All wrongdoing is sin.”

You and I still sin. If we desire to please God in our work, we need to confess and repent of our sin and love God for His willingness to forgive.
