The Giving Tuesday concept was launched in 2012 by Henry Timms of the 92nd Street Y in New York City and the United Nations Foundation. Timms desired to change the narrative from the consumerism that came with Black Friday and Cyber Monday to generosity.
The result is an international movement of organizations leveraging Giving Tuesday as a launch to the year end giving season. However, it seems to me that if the Biblical concept of firstfruits had been considered, Giving Tuesday should have been the Tuesday before Black Friday, rather than after.
Proverbs 3:9 says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.”
God desires us to put Him first with our harvest, rather than spending on ourselves, then giving our leftovers to God.
