Recently, I was teaching a men’s group on the value of using their areas of giftedness. One person shared with me that he and his son had just discussed giftedness the day before.
They came to a profound conclusion: Giftedness, without strong character, can have a very bad ending.
Bernie Madoff, who died in prison last year, was a great salesperson, but unfortunately he was selling a Ponzi scheme.
For that reason, I recommend that employers hire for character before hiring for competence. There are many talented people in the marketplace who use their talents for evil.
Proverbs 11:3 teaches, “The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the treacherous will destroy them.”
When hiring, look for gifted people, but first check out their integrity.
