Jeremiah 21 tells the story of Zedekiah, king of Judah. Frightened of the approaching Babylonian army, the king asks the prophet Jeremiah to intercede with God. Although he had disregarded God’s prior direction to submit to the Babylonians, Zedekiah wants God to repel the invaders.
But Jeremiah is compelled to speak God’s truth. God will not bless Zedekiah’s request, but instead will oppose him: “I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm in furious anger and in great wrath.” (Jeremiah 21:5)
In Ephesians 5:17, Paul wrote: “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
How often do we make our work plans and then seek God’s blessing? Seeking God’s will before we act is the only wise path to success.
