Walking into the conference room, I could tell my colleague was troubled. I couldn’t see her tear-filled eyes because her chin was almost on her chest. But I could tell something was wrong.

Following my usual response to heavy situations, I made a joke. When she looked up – expressionless – I knew I had badly misread the situation. When she shared her difficult family challenges, I felt even worse.

Proverbs 25:20 says, “Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on a wound, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.”

We are called to be Christ in the workplace. To do that, we must pay attention, sensitively speaking and acting in a way that ministers to the people around us.
