In chapter 18 of the Old Testament book of Exodus, Moses’ father-in-law Jethro delivers a powerful leadership lesson as he watches Moses act as the sole judge for the people.
“Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good… The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” Exodus 18:17-18
Jethro tells Moses to select capable men to share the burden.
“Teach them (God’s) decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave.” Exodus 18:20
Jethro calls on Moses to share the work to lift his burden, but also to train new leaders. When we try to do everything ourselves, we miss the opportunity to help our team members grow.
