Acts 19 describes the apostle Paul’s disruption to the city of Ephesus. Paul’s testimony about Jesus turned many away from the local cults, threatening the income of the silversmiths who were creating statues for idol worship. These craftsmen could not hear Paul’s message because they were too fixated on how it impacted their work.
Jesus warned in Matthew 6:24 that work and money can distract us from pursuing God wholeheartedly:
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
We can avoid making our income our master when we see our work as worship and service to God.
