In an interview with Coach Tommy Bowden, we were discussing how to work with football players who were not living up to their full potential. Coach Bowden said that it was important to get to know each player well enough to know “which buttons to push.”
Some of his players responded well to an encouraging word, others needed strong directives. Whether it’s a football team or a workplace, each person has untapped potential if we learn how each person responds best.
In Ephesians 4:29, Paul taught, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.”
Taking time out to understand each team member, and their motivations, can build them up and be time well spent.
