If you’ve managed people for long, you will eventually have someone who is not meeting your expectations. Determining the next steps can be challenging.
When someone is confronted with poor performance, some will get defensive and immediately assume that the problem is yours, not theirs. Their arrogance or overconfidence can prevent them from being willing to correct their issues, making future success unlikely.
Someone who is humble and teachable, however, may actually be able to turn the situation around. A second chance may be warranted.
Proverbs 13:10 says, “Through overconfidence comes nothing but strife, but wisdom is with those who receive counsel.”
If you’re trying to determine whether to terminate a poor performing employee or to give them one more chance, look for how teachable they seem to be.
