My grandfather was a great auto mechanic, but not nearly as effective as a business owner. On many weekends he would repair the car of a single mom or someone down on their luck at no charge.

One day, however, I was surprised when he installed a new carburetor on a man’s car known to be a millionaire. “Grandpa,” I asked, “Why didn’t you charge him anything?”

My grandpa gave a feeble excuse of hoping someday that this man would return the favor. Instead, this man continued to take advantage of my grandfather.

Proverbs 22:16 teaches, “Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.”

Giving favors to the wealthy isn’t usually as fruitful as many expect.
