My wife, Kathy, loves the study of people. One condition Kathy often discusses with me is narcissistic personality disorder.
The Mayo Clinic describes this disorder as, “a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.”
Research shows, however, that narcissists are often socially successful.
Basically, the Bible addresses narcissism as being selfish. We all struggle with selfishness, just some are more obsessed with themselves than others.
James 3:16 says, “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”
It’s good for leaders to pause occasionally and determine if their level of selfish ambition is causing disorder and evil in their workplace.
