In this series, we’re discussing different approaches to leading a company through a recession. Some leaders are financially driven who try to limit risk; others are visionaries.
When a recession is imminent, the financially driven will usually eliminate staff. But a visionary is different.
After 9-11, the airline industry was devastated. Almost all major airlines began massive layoffs.
Southwest Airlines didn’t. Instead, their visionary leaders committed to keeping their entire staff working. It was costly in the short term but allowed for rapid and profitable expansion.
1 Peter 5:2 say, “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing.”
Layoffs are sometimes inevitable, but visionary leaders look long term, shepherding their people well, even during bad times.
