My friend, Roger, recently returned from a 6-week Stanford Graduate program. One thought that one of his professors emphasized caused him to rethink his personal views on shaping culture in his business.
As a strong believer in having stated values for his business, Roger’s thinking was modified by his professor’s thought that “values are not the solution.” Roger was reminded that if values are not lived-out, unpracticed values can damage the business more than if you don’t have stated values.
Values have to be translated into behaviors or otherwise the values are meaningless.
James 2:17 teaches, “Faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.”
As Roger learned, in business, values are important, but not nearly as important as encouraging your team to behave according to your values.
