In this series, we’re talking about leadership lessons I learned from banking. Mike was a bank president who I would label as a Squeezer.

He had a bank that appeared very profitable, resulting in Mike being promoted to a bigger role. When we examined the bank after Mike’s promotion, however, we discovered that he had produced short-term profits by squeezing expenses that hurt the bank long-term.

Additionally, Mike hid significant problems, leaving future losses for his successor.

In Matthew 13:5, Jesus taught, “(Seeds) fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and they sprang up immediately, because they had no depth of soil.”

The leadership lesson I learned from Mike was that long-term profitability is a better indicator of leadership than a Squeezer’s short-term gain.
