Ignaz Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician who implemented hand washing procedures for doctors at Vienna General Hospital. This new practice decreased the incidence of maternal death from 18% to 2%.
Sadly, the medical community was offended to be told that a gentlemen’s hands could possibly carry disease. Doctors unanimously continued their deathly procedures.
Unfortunately, many great findings are ignored when they run counter to conventional wisdom. This groupthink and confirmation bias has since been called the Semmelweis Reflex.
The Pharisees were rigid and hard-hearted, embracing the Semmelweis Reflex. But to the tender-hearted disciples, Jesus said in Luke 10:23, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!”
When fresh new ideas come to our workplaces, let us carefully see what the Lord sees, and not just what our industry embraces.
