After the American Revolution, Christmas was viewed in America as an English custom and not widely celebrated. According to Wikipedia, in the 1820s, story tellers like Washington Irving and others encouraged new Christmas traditions.
In 1822, Clement Clark Moore released a poem now known as “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” It was these stories that popularized exchanging gifts, and many believe set us on the course of commercializing Christmas.
The real story began, however, in Luke 2 when an angel said, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
Many businesses want you to worship the gifts. Which story will be the focus of your Christmas?
