In Matthew 20, Jesus shares a story of an employer who went to the marketplace and hired laborers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay the ones who worked a full day a denarius, which was equal to a day’s wage.

At five in the afternoon, he hired additional laborers who had been unsuccessful in finding work. Out of generosity, the landowner paid the last laborers a full day’s wages, just as he paid those who worked all day long.

When the ones who worked all day complained, in Matthew 20:15 Jesus said, “Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’”

Employers who are followers of Christ should be known for their generosity, just like the landowner.
