According to time.com, tipping started after the Civil War. After the abolition of slavery, many former slaves went to work for restaurants and railroads.

These institutions found a way to exploit former slaves by hiring them for no pay, but with the promise that their customers would tip them if they worked hard.

Over time, the federal government encouraged this practice of customers subsidizing employee pay by passing two-tiered minimum wage laws. A far lower wage was established for restaurant workers due to the practice of tipping.

Colossians 4:1 says, “Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.”

What if employers paid employees a fair wage and customers went back to tipping as an expression of gratitude?
