When I was 25 years old, I started a faddish used car rental agency. After a year of struggle, a friend wisely recommended I close the business.
After working through my pride and fears, I finally mustered the courage to close the business. But, I discovered that I carried a great deal of shame.
I was ashamed of the mistakes I made trying to start a business during a terrible economy and ashamed of not being a savvy businessman. The shame I felt was paralyzing at times.
The psalmist says in Psalm 31:1, “In You, O Lord, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; In Your righteousness deliver me.”
We all make mistakes, but in God’s righteousness, we can become more vulnerable and take refuge from our shame.
