Likely one of the first American business coaches was a Paxtuxet Indian named Squanto. You may remember the first Thanksgiving story from your childhood.

In 1621, the Pilgrims were dying from hunger and disease. Squanto, an escaped slave that understood English, coached these struggling settlers on how to build a farming and fishing enterprise in this new country.

Even though Squanto had been kidnapped and mistreated by a previous English explorer, he selflessly helped the Pilgrims learn new farming methods. Squanto’s help ended with the celebration of their first harvest. Today, we refer to this celebration as Thanksgiving Day.

Philippians 2:3 teaches, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

An effective business coach is selfless and humble, just as Squanto demonstrated.
