Sometimes work can be lonely. Socializing can seem inappropriate, or hard to navigate between sexes. A Harvard Business Review article reports that “eighty-one percent of women feel excluded socially at work.”

This revelation can be discouraging, but then I’m reminded of the story in John 4. An ostracized Samaritan woman was at her workplace; a well, drawing water alone.

In her feelings of isolation, she was met by Jesus. Instead of ignoring her, he offered conversation. John 4:9 says, “The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?”

Who might you engage in conversation at work today? It could be the first step to reducing their feelings of social exclusion and possibly your own.
