While touring a prison in Hutchinson, Kansas, I witnessed the value of work. Inside the Hutchinson prison there exists a private company called Seat King.
Seat King hires inmates to assemble seats for riding lawn equipment. This gets the inmates away from their small prison cells, pays them a fair wage, and provides dignity.
Nationally, most inmates, when released, will be back within three years. But, according to the warden in Hutchinson, the recidivism rate falls to 8% for the ones who work in private industry.
Ecclesiastes 3:22 says, “So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot.”
Our work provides dignity and value. Allowing inmates to work in prison may be better for them and for society.
