In America, when we pray “give us our daily bread,” I suspect most of us don’t really mean it. We usually desire far more than just today’s provision.
There are seasons, however, when some small business owners see payroll approaching and discover there is simply no cash in the bank. Suddenly, praying for our daily bread may seem more relevant.
Proverbs 30:8 says, “Lord give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.”
Praying for daily bread may be hard, but the psalmist knew the risks of receiving more or less than our daily provisions.
