My son, Jeremy, works in a sheltered workshop for workers with special needs. Local businesses contract with the workshop to perform routine jobs.
In the past, Jeremy’s employer paid him based on his volume of production. Because of Jeremy’s poor social skills and obsessive compulsiveness, he worked very fast.
What motivates Jeremy, however, is not extra money. Instead, he’s driven by seeing work disappear as fast as possible.
His boss wisely used this knowledge to drive Jeremy’s productivity even higher. Unfortunately, Jeremy’s employer is changing his pay to minimum wage. Jeremy’s employer will maintain productivity for less money.
Proverbs 16:26 teaches, “The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on.”
A wise employer learns what motivates each employee and then increases productivity by providing the ideal incentives.
