Self-imposed deadlines can sometimes undermine my relationships. When fiscal year-end draws near, I can get too focused on achieving the goals that I have set. Instead of focusing on what I want for our donors or customers, I can get too focused on what I want from them.

Likewise, in the sales world, there are goals and deadlines that can shift our focus from listening and responding to the needs of our customers to pursuing our own personal agenda. The most effective approach is to set aside selfish ambition.

Philippians 2:3 teaches, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

If you desire to reach your goals and build strong relationships, set aside your selfish ambition. Then trust God for the result.
