When I began my banking career, I spent time investigating bank frauds. One of the frauds I worked on was that of a bank president who determined his significant pay wasn’t enough.
This president began producing false travel expense reports, claiming that he was driving to headquarters, four hours each way, multiple times a month. His spending habits, however, continued to grow, leading him to become more aggressive with his travel claims.
Finally, a bank teller uncovered the fraud and reported this bank president’s actions. He was convicted of fraud and sent to prison.
Proverbs 13:11 teaches, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.”
Learning to discipline ourselves to live on less than we make is more profitable than dishonesty and possible prison.
