As I’ve reviewed dozens of job applications lately, it’s not uncommon to see applicants with five jobs in just a three-to-five-year period. Brevity of time on a job reflects in part our cultural changes to loyalty.
There was a time when loyalty was valued by both the employer and the employee. My father was loyal to General Motors for his entire career as were many others in his era.
Loyalty cuts both ways. Employers don’t breed loyalty as in the past, but employees also seem less loyal to their employers.
Proverbs 20:6 teaches, “Many a person proclaims his own loyalty, but who can find a trustworthy person?”
Although the answer is complex, maybe it’s time for employers to give thought to how best to encourage more loyalty in our workplaces.
