For most of this year, there have been almost double the number of jobs that need filled compared to the people needing a job. An untapped pool of possible talent however is the disabled.

According to the Department of Labor, in October, the overall unemployment rate was 3.3%, but for the disabled, it was 8.2%. As the incidence of autism continues to skyrocket, and Baby Boomers retire, we ought to become more compassionate and creative in the workplace to fill more of the open positions.

Colossians 3:12 teaches, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

As employers, we may solve our staffing problems by considering those who are disabled. But to do so will probably require creativity and compassion.

If you have interest in hiring the disabled but aren’t sure where to start let me know.
