For a while, I worked for a banker who had a fierce competitive rivalry with his cousin. There were seasons when the rivalry was more intense due to their personal conflict.
My peers started realizing that if they had a loan prospect who was also getting a bid from our rival bank, they could stir up the rivalry to their benefit. Loans were getting approved that would never typically get approved just so that our CEO could defeat his cousin.
That season wasn’t very profitable for the bank.
Proverbs 24:17-18 teaches, “Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice, or the Lord will see and disapprove …” (NIV)
Don’t let your competitive spirit cloud your judgment. God loves your competitor as well.
