This week we’re discussing God’s view on civil disobedience. In general, God demands that we obey the law, but there are exceptions.
In Daniel 1, Daniel has been required to eat food likely sacrificed to the king’s idols. Rather than refuse directly and suffer the consequences, Daniel wisely developed a win/win strategy, without violating his conscience.
In verse 12 Daniel tells the guard, “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”
There are times our conscience will not allow us to obey a law or authority, but the wise person prayerfully and creatively looks for win/win solutions.
