Generosity can cause harm if not driven by the proper motivation. My friend, Stan, was so convicted by the biblical account of the rich young ruler, who Jesus directed to sell all that he had, that he determined to do likewise.
Stan became consumed with giving away all his wealth. Unfortunately, he talked more about “getting to zero” than he did funding God’s plan. He gave away millions, but much of it was to individuals adept at scamming others, instead of charitable organizations.
Tragically, many who received money, funded drug habits and other poor behaviors. For some, Stan’s money did more harm than good.
Proverbs 16:2 teaches, “All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord.”
It’s important to be generous, but do it to please God.
