A recent post by religious statistician Ryan Burge analyzed Christians’ fear of death. Across denominations, it appears people are less fearful of dying as they get older. Perhaps these older adults can look back with satisfaction on their lives, or perhaps they have grown more confident in God’s promises as they have aged.
Regardless, understanding the limits of our time on earth is a powerful reminder to make sure our work and relationships matter.
David prayed for this awareness in Psalm 39:4: “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.”
Deadlines drive focus. Remembering our limited time this side of heaven helps us to focus on what is truly important – perhaps all the way into eternity.
