This year a friend asked me to help with a tax hotline on a local television station. Since I’ve done taxes for over forty years, I thought it might be fun, and accepted.

For 3 ½ hours the phone rang nonstop with person after person calling with their tax questions. The work was exhausting, and, it was a little frightening having people ask me questions for which I didn’t always know the correct answer.

After this experience I had a new appreciation and better understanding of those people who work in a call center answering customer calls all day long.

Proverbs 11:12 teaches, “Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.”

Before mocking someone else’s vocation, try gaining understanding through firsthand experience.
