A former General Mills executive, Marc Belton, discussed three P’s: Perks, Privilege, and Power in an interview with Dallas Theological Seminary. Let’s discuss each of those this week beginning with Perks.
As a young banker I once presented a loan request for a country club to our loan committee. The CEO was so excited he pronounced to the entire room that the bank should buy me a membership to this country club!
Envy spread throughout the bank. Soon thereafter, some of my superiors negotiated country club memberships for themselves, and my offer was significantly modified to make it less attractive. I passed.
Galatians 5:26, “Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.”
As an employer, be careful what perks you offer. It can bring envy and infighting.
