In my twenties, our audit department hired a supervisor I’ll call Mary. She reminded everyone of her college degrees and constantly complained about our boss.
Mary promoted her credentials as making her better qualified to lead the department. Eventually, during a staff meeting, she challenged our boss, expecting coworkers to support her. No one did.
That was Mary’s final week with the company, and the grumbling stopped.
James 5:9 warns, “Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!” (NIV).
Complaining can feel harmless, but it damages trust, divides teams, and undermines our witness. Before criticizing a coworker or leader, examine your motives and choose a conversation instead.
Grumbling doesn’t reflect Jesus, but truth and humility do.
