A recent discovery of mine is that nepotism isn’t just the hiring of a family member. Instead, according to the dictionary.com definition, Nepotism is “Favoritism granted to relatives or close friends, without regard to their merit.”
For small business owners, family members are often a source of trusted labor. But to non-family staff, even diligent efforts to treat family members as staff can be perceived as favoring them.
Showing favor to family members at work needs tied to merit as much as possible.
Proverbs 12:2 teaches, “A good person will obtain favor from the Lord, but He will condemn a person who devises evil.”
The Lord loves each of us, but shows favor based on merit. As leaders with family members on staff, we should strive to do likewise.
