According to a Forbes article, Volkswagen, had a strategy to become the number one automaker manufacturer in the world by 2018. As more details have surfaced about Volkswagen’s “Diesel scandal,” it seems they may have tried to reach their goal of surpassing Toyota by violating the rules.

By using software to deceive regulators on their emission standards, Volkswagen reduced production costs and improved engine performance. This, in turn, helped Volkswagen sell more cars.

Their pursuit, however, has now impacted their credibility and reputation, giving Toyota a new competitive advantage.
