Integrity Moments is a 60 second workday devotional that provides business leaders with helpful insight into what the Bible says about our work and how we can fully integrate our faith into our vocational calling.

As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, I’m highlighting the foundational pillars for business that our Founding Fathers established. The fourth pillar is enforceable contracts.

Before the Constitution was written, individual states could undermine contracts that crossed state lines. The Constitution was written, in part, to unify a nation and provide that no state law could impair contracts.

This allowed businesses to confidently engage in commerce, and enforce contracts across state lines, allowing them to borrow money, form partnerships, and engage in trade.

Numbers 30:2 says, “When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.”

We need laws that allow us to fulfill our contracts, not undermine them.
