Recently, Kathy and I went with friends on a Kansas City Gangster tour. We learned that Boss Tom Pendergast ruled Kansas City in the 1920s by providing favors for others, provided they voted for his political candidates.

This enabled Pendergast to handpick politicians who ran his city, including Harry Truman.

However, when Truman submitted a road contract for bids, according to our tour guide, Pendergast assumed his concrete company would get the contract. But he didn’t.

When Pendergast confronted Truman, Truman reportedly told Pendergast, “Next time, be the lowest bidder.”

Proverbs 16:13 says, “Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks what is right.”

It’s said that Pendergast respected Truman’s honesty and learned not to expect special treatment. Are you courageous enough to stand for honesty?
