Unfortunately, our nation’s history includes seasons when laborers have been abused and oppressed. In the 1880s that was the case as the railroad barons required laborers to work on average 60 hours a week.
When one individual feels they’re being abused, it’s hard for that one person to individually overcome their employer’s demands. But when abused workers stand collectively, they have a far better chance of defeating employer abuse.
In 1894, Labor Day was declared a national holiday to honor the laborers and to help unify the labor movement against oppressive work conditions.
Proverbs 28:15 says, “Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people.”
Workers standing together, united in a cause against oppression, has proven an effective way to overcome heavy-handed employers.
