In this series, we are looking at five traits common to successful entrepreneurs and how unconventional business leaders should approach each. Today’s trait is Compassionate Empathy.

The definition of empathy is “the ability to identify with or understand another’s situation or feelings.” Compassion is “deep awareness of the suffering of another accompanied by the wish to relieve it.” Empathy involves the head. Compassion involves the heart. Successful unconventional entrepreneurs engage both compassion and empathy.

In Philippians 2, Paul commands believers to “fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

Many successful entrepreneurs do intensive customer-discovery to deeply understand the needs of their target customers. Unconventional business leaders are driven by love for their neighbors to eliminate suffering and bring true joy.
