Conducting performance reviews with staff members who need some correction can be very stressful. When I was in banking, I had some staff that I liked personally, others, not so much.

Over time, I learned that when I didn’t have a personal connection to someone it was easier to come across as cold and uncaring. This caused the truth of their poor performance to be even harder to receive.

When the review was with someone I cared about, however, I tended to deliver the news in a more loving and compassionate manner.

Proverbs 27:6 teaches, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”

If you have a tough conversation coming soon, start thinking and treating that person as a friend and then deliver your news accordingly.
