Recently, Pete Greig, author of Red Moon Rising, shared a personal story with me. Pete has a friend, I’ll call Tim.
As a seasoned teacher, Tim’s pastor urged Tim to lead their Sunday School program. When Tim finally agreed, the pastor publicly prayed over Tim for surrendering to his call to teach youth.
Tim was angry. He had faithfully taught public school for 30 years without his pastor ever praying over him. From Tim’s viewpoint, his pastor only affirmed Tim’s calling when it involved the church.
Ephesians 4:1 teaches, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”
Our calling doesn’t require our service to only be within the church. We can faithfully serve wherever God plants us.
