This week I’m addressing the importance of selecting the right leaders for a board or church. In Titus 1:8, Paul said about overseers, “Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.”

The word “upright” in this passage refers to someone who is just or equitable in their actions. This is where wisdom leads a person to make reasonable and evenhanded decisions when confronted with challenging dilemmas.

An upright board member is the one who brings calm and reason to emotionally charged situations. They can see beyond the emotions and lead the group to higher ground.

These kinds of leaders are worth their weight in gold. If you want a strong board, find people who are upright and just.
